Very nice spin and interesting device for "teh switch". It's realistic that some people (most people) would take advantage of the situation for their own reasons. Phil thinks it's okay to stop his own pain even at the expense of his best friend. Mike's mother seriously needs help though.
A nice sequel might involve a mentor who can show Mike how to not only control his gift but use it to show people how it feels to be used as he has been.

Subjective! Unless you're asking literally is it more in a metagene/mutant category or in a "some higher power cursed me" category. I was thinking the former.
